OR Firefighters Use Bailout System to Rescue Victim from Fire

Clackamas firefighters used their personal escape systems to rescue a woman from an early morning house fire in Happy Valley.

Heavy fire engulfed the first floor when Clackamas Fire District 1 arrived at 3:46 a.m. Wednesday and were told that a woman was trapped on the second floor.

Two firefighters were able to find the stairway to and made their way to the second floor while intense heat drove two other firefighters back to the exterior, according a a press release from the department.

Firefighters recalled that the heat was so intense that it melted the carpet in the hallway.

Once they located the victim in a bedroom, they shut the door and radioed that they needed to evacuate through a window.

One of the firefighters deployed their personal escape system and hung outside the window until the other firefighter was able to assist the victim to the firefighter on the rope. They hung below the window sill until a ladder was placed to them and the victim was brought down the ladder.

The second firefighter bailed out the window just as the room become engulfed in flames.

The woman was able to walk to the ambulance and was transported to the hospital, according to the release.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in 30 minutes.

The homeowner told Clackamas fire officials that a smoke alarm woke her up and that's how two occupants were able to escape.

PRESS RELEASE - Preparing Yourself for the Petzl EXO Personal Safety System and the Gemtor Harness By LARRY COHEN, LIEUTENANT FDNY Ret.

With the much anticipated, soon to be released, Petzl EXO Personal Safety System, (PSS) fire departments and firefighters should understand that there are certain bunker gear concerns, harness requirements and training issues that need to be addressed in order for the system to be properly attached and deployed correctly. FDNY and Petzl have designed this particular system to be worn on the outside of the firefighter’s protective pants, and under the turnout coat. The reason for this location is so it can be easily accessed and rapidly deployed, while at the same time protected from a fire environment by the protective coat. Thousands of hours have gone into the engineering and practical application of this device so that firefighters can safely exit a hostile environment in a burning structure.

WILDWOOD — Firefighters attending the annual New Jersey State Firemen's Convention use the annual event to gear up.

From new trucks to water-rescue gear, the annual convention draws vendors from across the country hawking the latest in new equipment.

Sam Squire, of Mays Landing, sells heavy trucks manufactured by Pierce, based in Appleton, Wis. Fie said the convention is his biggest source of new clients in New Jersey.

Squire showed off a new canary-yellow truck made forthe Seaville Volunteer Fire Company in Upper Township.

"It's a combination pumper and rescue truck. Fire companies are having to multitask," he said. "Seaville covers part of the Garden State Parkway, so they respond to a lot of car accidents."

The $625,000 truck features a compartment with various hydraulic equipment to cut people out of damaged vehicles. And it has four winch slots to pull vehicles to safety, he said.

We are saddened to announce the passing of a good friend and a great firefighter, Chris Good. (Goody). Chris was a sweet hearted soul who represented the best of the best when it came to the fire service.  Chris loved everything about the fire service and demonstrated that in his abilities. We met Chris years ago when Fire Ground Tech trained the Goodwill Fire Company out in Westchester Pa. It was quite obvious that Goody had natural abilities on the fire ground.  More importantly Chris was a traditional guy. He led junior firefighters the way they ought to be, with discipline, experience, and above all the desire to do the right thing. After training we always looked forward to Chris leading the way into the local pub to discuss the day’s training over a cold beer.  Chris, you will be sadly missed and we will always remember you as what a true firefighter should be. Our condolences to his family, wife Jessica and his 3 kids, an 8 year old step daughter, a 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter along with his company and department.

Fire Ground Technologies along with Gemtor have designed and manufactured a lumbar bag specifically designed around the Petzl EXO escape system. While we used the Petzl system as a basis for our design, the lumbar bag is capable of storing almost any escape system on the market. The bag provides a reduced profile for the firefighter while keeping deployment of any system simple and easy. The materials that were used were requested by the FDNY, where there are currently 200 units in the field being tested. FDNY Research and Development has been working with Fire Ground Tech and Gemtor for over 3 years on this project. The bag is available for both left and right deployment options and easily attaches to any class II harness. By affording the firefighter a more comfortable option, it is more likely that the system will be worn as part of a firefighter's ensemble. As a result, Petzl supports our efforts in this new option of storing the escape system. Fore more information on the "new" Fire Ground Tech / Gemtor lumbar bag, contact us directly or call Gemtor.

WILDWOOD---Everything a firefighter needs was all in one spot .....fire trucks, and vendors packed the Wildwood Convention Center and its parking lot. "We have everything new that comes out as the vendors get it they bring it if they have it new its here at the show," said Dave Thompson. The New Jersey State Firemen's Annual Convention is one of the largest shows on the east coast, and it's put on by all 6 fire companies on the island... Thompson said, "This event has grown tremendously but fire fighting has changed we use to just grab a hose and run into a building not today I was trained at 28 hours today its a 134 hours its a totally different world." And one vendor, Fire Ground Technologies is proof of how things have definitely changed. Larry Cohen said, "If a firefighter were to get trap if they cant tolerate the heat or smoke they tie off or anchor at the window and slide down on the rope." The technology is called the petzl exo and it's used with a special harness. Cohen said, "Both components derived from a 2005 incident with the NY Fire Department where we lost two members of the dept as a result its an effort to come out with what we call a bail out system." Firefighters were able to see firsthand how it works. The goal is to get this technique recognized nationwide which is catching on here in New Jersey and in New York......NBC 40 learned its just another way for firefighters to stay safe.
